Abstract

Phenoloigical observations were carried out on two different tree woody species viz. Adansonia digitata L. and Bomabax ceiba L. of Bombacaceae family in Girnar Reserve Forest, near Junagadh in Gujarat state, in western India 0 0 0 0 (70 28' to 70 27'N latitude and 21 30' to 21 26' E longitude) during the year 2008-10. The phenological behavior of both species were little different throughout the period of observation. In Adansonia digitata L., new foliage and leaf fall remained for 50 and 131.5 days respectively as mean value for both the years, while flowering and fruiting was observed for 50.5 and 33 days respectively. In Bombax ceiba L. new foliage and leaf fall was seen during 48.5 and 138.5 mean days respectively, while flowering and fruiting remained for 51 and 58.5 days respectively. Inter phenophase phenology showedthat duration of new foliage to leaf fall remained about 195 days in Adansonia digitataL while 335.5 days in Bombax ceiba L. Different phenological parameters like diameter of stem, branches per tree, leaves per branch, inflorescence per branch, flowering per branch, fruiting per branch were also evaluated.

Abstract

The present study was carried out on 26 species of 13 different botanical families in Girnar Reserve Forest near Junagadh, Gujarat, India, for their reproductive phenological events, viz. flowering and fruiting from August 2008 to August 2011. Flowering and fruiting phenology varied significantly (P < 0.01). Mean values of percentage of species in flowering event indicated highest peak in September followed by August; the highest peak for fruiting (83.3%) was observed in December followed by January (57.7%). Sida cordifolia L. showed highest pooled average of 179 days for flowering. However, Vernonia anthelmintica L. pooled the lowest average of 33.3 flowering days. Highest and lowest pooled average number of fruiting days were recorded for Cassia auriculata L. and Cassia occidentalis Linn. with 279.7 and 35.7 days/year respectively. On the basis of flowering, three species were identified with long flowering duration whereas six species were identified with short flowering duration. In the case of fruiting, five and two species were screened for long fruiting duration and short fruiting duration respectively. Average deviation in flowering among all species was ± 15.5 days from the first to second year of study; however, this was ± 15.4 days for the second to third year, resulting in overall 16.4 days of deviation for the entire study period. In the case of fruiting, the deviation was ± 20.7 and ± 17.3 days respectively, from the first to second year and second to third year, whereas the pooled deviation was 19 days in fruiting.

Abstract

Porbandar district is rich in ethnomedicinal plants. In the present paper 78 plant species used in folk medicine for vomiting have been documented. Due to poor condition of modern healthcare facilities and poverty, indigenous people of the district fully or partially depend on local medicinal plants. An attempt has been made to document traditional Knowledge in the treatment of vomiting.

Abstract

The present communication reports first-hand information gathered on 34 ethnomedicinal plants traditionally used by the tribal and rural Folk of Porbandar district of Gujarat, so the treatment of dyspepsia Porbandar district of Gujarat was surveyed intensively to collect plants and plant products used by the tribal and rural folk for the treatment of dyspepsia. The study provides informations on local names, botanical name, families, Parts used and mode of administration as practiced by the tribal and rural folk. The medicinal plant wealth of the district is rich in raw materials needed for establishing herbal drugs collection and processing centres for human welfare.
